Towler, Children Commissioner with pupils of Hartridge High

A group of young people from local school, Hartridge High attended the By Us For Us event which took place in March at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

They had the opportunity to pose various questions to the Children Commissioner –Keith Towler who was quite receptive and addressed issues raised by the young people.

Life Map Planners young people participated in the new initiative by the Welsh Assembly Government to involve young people in the recruitment and selection of practitioners within the public sector.

The young people were trained in the selection process and recruitment of personnel, this group of young people can participate in future recruitments of public sector staff locally and on a national level.

The Welsh Assembly Government hopes that this will create better understanding and engagement between young people and the people who will be providing support to the young people in the public sector.

Other Projects

  • Chambers School and Career Center: School-to-work program for out-of-school youth ages 14 to 21. The youth is encouraged to participate in various trades and industries work placement that will enable them gain transferable skills.

  • Make It Happen: Project to educate and inspire young people aged 8 to 21 through out-of-school company experiences. The young people are taken on visits to companies where they experience real life scenario of various industry professions encouraged to ask questions with possible placement opportunities.

  • Trailblazers: a central program which will enable at risk students and their mentors participate in a structured program of support. At-risk middle school students and their mentors participate in an energising retreat, followed by a seven month structured program that includes monthly team-building and group activities. The program ends with a graduation but the mentor and youth remain together for the following five months.

  • Turnaround: focuses on students who are chronically suspended from schools. The goal of the program is to rekindle the youth's commitment to learning and being successful in the classroom. By empowering young people to finish school, mentors are improving the student's success in the work world as adults.

  • Higher Ground: engages young people involved in the juvenile court system. The mentoring relationship is utilised to establish a program of change in the young person's life. The mentor encourages goal-setting, self discipline, and skill development that improves the young person's sense of hopefulness.

    They are paired with professional mentors who will be given training support on engaging the young persons in chosen areas of interest. Mentors and youth work one-on-one for a year and are also offered opportunities to participate in monthly group activities and outings.

  • Lunch Friends: works with children from local primary schools. Adult mentors serve as positive role models as they come to school each week to have lunch with their "friend."
    The program lasts for the duration of the school year.
  • New Directions: Business/Social Enterprise Mentoring project for youth ages 16 to 21. The young people from disadvantaged communities are provided information and support to encourage towards setting up business or social enterprise whichever is their preferred route of interest.
